In recognition of International Women’s Day, we caught up with Jasmine Leed-Leamer, Production Manager at Chemring’s Lara plant in Australia.
What is it about manufacturing that attracted you?
“I’ve always been in production. I love how dynamic it is and how you’re always solving problems. There’s continually something new to learn, and each day is different. I’ve never been an office-based person. I enjoy being out and about, part of a team and working together to solve issues.”
What sorts of issues do you think women face in the workplace?
“There are many similarities across industries, but some are certainly less progressive than others in terms of creating an inclusive work environment. In my old workplace, for example, there was only one female toilet. So, if that toilet was out of order or being cleaned, I had to drive to the local McDonalds to use their bathroom facilities. It feels like a luxury to have six female toilets now!”
“I’ve also spent most of my career wearing men’s workwear. At the start of my career, there was no safety gear designed for women, so I wore men’s safety boots and men’s high vis jackets. Nowadays, there is far more choice. My kids even comment that I look so much nicer when I go to work now as I’m wearing clothes that actually fit properly!”
How do you find the culture at Chemring?
“We’ve got a great culture at Chemring; everyone supports one another, whatever your position or gender. In all workplaces, I’d like to see and hear more of women supporting one another. It’s our responsibility to build each other up.”
