International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) is celebrating its 8th year in 2021. Brought to you by the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), INWED is an international awareness campaign which raises the profile of women in engineering and focuses attention on the amazing career opportunities available to women and girls in this exciting industry.
WES has worked tirelessly for over a hundred years to ensure equality for women in engineering. Today WES’ mission is to support women in engineering to fulfil their potential and support the engineering industry to be inclusive.
The theme for this year’s INWED is Engineering Heroes and so here are some of our Chemring heroes to celebrate the occasion.
Stine Roset is a project engineer at Chemring Nobel in Norway.
“I work as a project engineer at Chemring Nobel. My role is to work on capex projects all around the factory. I do initial lab work, engineering of the process, order equipment, follow up deliveries and make sure the project works as intended. The projects are all different sizes, from changing a valve to changing how the process works.”
What attracted you to a career in engineering?
“I always liked maths and science when I attended school. I particularly enjoyed making things blow up in chemistry! Therefore, a career in something scientific came very naturally to me. I liked the diversity of possibilities that engineering would give me. Therefore, I applied for engineering.”
What qualifications do you have and what was the gender diversity like on your course(s)?
“I have a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). We were approximately equal numbers of boys and girls in my class.”
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
“I enjoy the daily diversity of work tasks. I also like that I can follow a project from early conception to being part of running the plant.”
What's your proudest career moment so far?
“I am proud that I have helped design and start up sludge treatment plants in some of the biggest cities in the world. By using sludge to produce biogas, a reduction in the overall CO2 emissions to the atmosphere is achieved.”
Do you have any words of advice for other women considering a career in engineering?
“By having a degree in engineering, you are not limited to just one specific job. The solid foundation engineering gives can be used in so many ways.”
