Spotlight on Chemring Sensors & Electronic Systems - applying their skills to help the fight against future threats

Chemring Sensors & Electronic Systems (CSES) is the world leader in the design, development, and production of counter-IED ground penetrating radar (GPR) systems. They also offer a range of advanced point and standoff chemical, biological and explosive detectors and identifiers.
Located in Dulles and Charlotte, USA, with a team of around 150 people, they provide industry-leading expertise to the US military, homeland security, law enforcement and international customers.
CSES’ strategy is to target growing niches within the defence, security and public safety markets, based on their detailed understanding of the new and emerging needs of customers.

President, Amish Mehta, explains further, “CSES is a business of two halves. One side of the business focuses on high tech sensors for explosive hazards, which has been our core and foundation for the last ten years. The other half of CSES develops world-class chemical and biological sensor technology. The two share a lot of similarities in terms of the scientific expertise and knowledge of our people. At our core, we are all here to develop life-saving technology. And we do that by shortening what we call the Sense, Analyse, Treat loop, i.e., we develop systems to sense the threat, analyse what it is and provide accurate threat information into the hands of our users to enable other actions.  The more we can tighten that loop, the more lives we can positively impact.”

“At the end of the day, we are all here to save lives – one company, one team.”

Over 2020, CSES has continued to make good progress in all the US Department of Defence’s (DoD’s) Programs of Record. The US DoD’s Explosive Hazard Detection HMDS program, on which Chemring is the sole-source provider, continues to progress with customer deliveries made throughout last year. During the year, CSES was awarded a further $200
million contract modification from the US DoD for the HMDS and spares. And more recently, CSES received a further delivery order of $53m as part of this contract. This provides excellent visibility on this Program of Record well into FY22.

Comments Amish, “What’s amazing is, with that order, we’ve reached a major milestone for CSES. We have now successfully delivered $1bn of life-saving systems. Since the founder of NIITEK (bought by Chemring in 2008) first started developing mine detection technology in his garage, CSES has grown into the premier GPR supplier to the US army, also selling systems and spares across the world. “On a financial level that’s great news, but it’s really about the countless lives that have been saved. I’m immensely proud of the team for getting us to this milestone.”
