World Environment Day

June 5 is World Environment Day, the biggest international day for the environment, and this year marks the 50th anniversary. World Environment Day is a global platform for inspiring positive change.
Across Chemring, our goal of zero harm goes beyond the management of safety. We are committed to environmental sustainability, both globally and in our local communities, and reducing our environmental impact.

To mark World Environment Day, we spoke to Willie, Environmental Manager at Chemring Countermeasures USA (CCM USA), to find out about the new recycling centre and what this significant day means to them.

Says Willie, “World Environment Day is a day where we commemorate the value of our environment, understanding that having clean air, water, and land, which sustains our very lives, is a priority. The protection of the environment is everyone’s responsibility, and we all have a part to play. At CCM USA, our goal for 2023 is to reach 75% landfill avoidance, and we have various programmes across the business to help us meet that goal.”

In recognition of the need to reduce our environmental impact and protect the planet the CCM USA Toone Facility officially repurposed their CAP Shop Building as a recycling hub. Explains Willie, “The CAP Shop was once an area where out-of-service equipment was stored. From now on, the CAP Shop will be known as the Recycling Operations Centre (ROC).

“Previously, the Environmental team only used a small portion of the CAP Shop for compacting cardboard. However, earlier this year, all the out-of-service equipment was determined to be no longer usable and was sent for metal recycling. This opened much-needed space for storing up truckload quantities of various recyclable materials including paper, cardboard, scrap electronics, aluminium cans, plastic waste, wooden pallets, and glass bottles.”

The ROC will contribute hugely to CCM USA’s local target of 75% landfill avoidance and help Chemring Group reach its global target of zero waste to landfill by 2030.
