Meet Scott, one of our apprentices at Chemring Countermeasures UK (CCM UK). Scott shares how the apprenticeship programme has supported his learning style due to ADHD.
Scott Blackmore, Quality Systems Associate, CCM UK
“I’ve started my apprenticeship at level 4, as I went straight to work after college and struggled with studying at home.
“My apprenticeship consists of 14 months under tutor-led learning, which consisted of monthly online sessions and small work projects, a professional discussion on my portfolio of work, and then a six-month project.
“Chemring has ensured that I’m able to focus on and prioritise my apprenticeship. The work is all beneficial for the organisation as it relates directly to my job role. Also, any time I’ve needed to work away from the office to keep up with submission deadlines has been totally supported.
“Having ADHD, for me, the most challenging part of my apprenticeship is ensuring that the actions I undertake that contribute to my apprenticeship are recorded in a timely manner. I am lucky enough that I am part of a team that cares about my progress and is happy to support me in the specific ways that I need to help me.
“I’ve also enjoyed the fact that my apprenticeship has thrust me into uncomfortable areas related to communication with colleagues and superiors. I’ve learned a great deal about leadership and influence and grown immeasurably during my course.
“If you’ve ever studied any subject and struggled to see its relevance to the real world, then it’s very likely that an apprenticeship is for you. If it’s chosen well and is closely linked to the work you’ll be undertaking, it can almost be as if you’re not studying at all.”
