Josh Loudon, Mechanical Maintenance Technician Apprentice, Chemring Energetics UK
At school, I always enjoyed maths. I love problem-solving and coming up with different ways of achieving a goal. Following school, I felt the path of an apprenticeship was best suited to me, and I would gain a lot more from it, lots of different experience, independence, and responsibility. I also saw a future career path with the apprenticeship and can see myself working for Chemring for a long time.
The apprenticeship at Chemring stood out for me as it sounded really interesting and different from the others available. I had also heard good things about all the support and opportunities they offer their workers, and with good facilities.
My apprenticeship consists of one day at college and three on site, learning on the job with the tradesmen. Each morning, I link up with a tradesmen and we go across the site to wherever we are needed, to start set ups. Set ups consist of adjusting machines and tooling to suit the job for that day. Following that, we work through the jobs we have been assigned, ensuring job cards are filled and signed off by the area manager.
I enjoy all aspects of my role but really enjoy learning new skills and applying them to different jobs when needed.
I would highly recommend doing an apprenticeship, because if you stick with it and apply yourself, you are able to do anything you want in that field. I can see myself staying at Chemring because I love the set up and how everything is run.
